Cataract surgery is a day procedure which generally takes 10 minutes. It is performed under local anaesthetic with heavy twilight sedation so you are comfortable.
During the surgery, 2 small incisions are made at the front of the eye and the cataract is removed with an ultrasound instrument. An intraocular lens is then inserted which has been specially calculated for your eye and visual needs.
You are generally in the day hospital for 3-4 hours and will need someone to take you home afterwards.
The operation is very safe but as with all surgeries there are some risks and Dr Moloney will go through these with you. However, as Dr Moloney is trained in both cataract and retinal surgery, he is able to deal with anything unexpected which could occur during surgery.
